This was a little weird, but it made sense – since Plantoids did not unlock the ability to play as Machine empires, there's no reason why Machine portraits would need to be locked behind it. This included the Plantoid one, even though Plantoids were only added with the Plantoids DLC.

When Synthetic Dawn first released, we gained access to the Machine species types, and all the species portraits associated with it. Why would Dyson Sphere and Matter Decompressor require different DLCs despite having such similar functions, for any reason besides one being developed later than the other? I mean, why would Mega Shipyard require Federations when a much more relevant structure like Interstellar Assembly doesn't? For any reason other than the Mega Shipyard simply happened to be developed later? I'm really not sure how I feel about having to play a DLC catch 'em all to make proper use of Megastructures, with requirements that don't even seem to make sense.
